When Mario retired after nearly five decades of competition, a commemorative wine was produced in his honor in 1994. That event sparked an interest in owning a winery. To accomplish this goal he teamed up with his former associate, Joseph E. Antonini, who as President, Chairman and CEO of Kmart, was one of Mario's major sponsors. Together they formed Andretti Wine Group (AWG Limited), a publicly traded stock company, to acquire property and build Andretti Winery, with Joe serving as Chairman and Mario as Vice Chairman.
